Proton VPN Puts Your Online Privacy and Security First

Whenever you use the internet, especially public Wi-Fi, your private information may be subject to spying tools and software that hackers use to steal data. These data may be as simple as the websites you visit, but it can also include confidential information such as your bank or credit card numbers. If the hacker intercepts your web activity and gets ahold of your private information, they can either use it for blackmail, ransom, or sell it to other people.

To prevent these threats from happening, you may need to use a VPN, or Virtual Private Network, every time you go online, especially when you use the internet for paying bills, purchasing products, or logging in to your accounts. A VPN cloaks your real IP address and directs web traffic through an encrypted tunnel, which makes all your data undetectable and inaccessible by hacking software and devices.

Proton VPN can help safeguard your online privacy and security with their fast, reliable, and high-speed VPN service.

About Proton VPN

Proton VPN was established in 2014 at CERN where the web was born, and the founding members met. The company started as a crowdfunded project, which aims to protect activists and journalists who use ProtonMail. Most of the founding team are scientists, engineers, and software developers. The Company is based in Switzerland, which is not part of the Fourteen Eyes Surveillance Alliance.

Pricing and Subscription Plans

Proton VPN has a free version that includes one VPN connection, access to three server locations, medium speed connectivity, and no logs/no ads.

But if you want to use more of the features their VPN service has, you can choose from three different paid subscription plans. All paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The Basic Plan costs S4.00 per month ($48.00 yearly) and includes two VPN connections, access to 50 servers, high-speed connectivity, no logs/no ads, and P2P and BitTorrent Support.

The Plus Plan charges $8.00 per month ($96.00 yearly) and includes five VPN connections, all other features of the Basic Plan, plus the highest connection speed at 10 Mbps, Secure Core VPN, TOR over VPN, and access to blocked content.

The Visionary Plan costs $24.00 a month ($288.00 yearly) and includes all Plus Plan features plus 10 VPN connections, and a ProtonMail Visionary account to their encrypted email service.

All paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Features

Want to know more about ProtonVPN? Have a look at their features before you buy a ProtonVPN subscription. We listed a few key features that might interest you;

Secure Core

Proton VPN safeguards your online privacy through their Secure Core architecture. This feature protects your data against network-based attacks as your web traffic goes through multiple servers before leaving the secure network. Proton VPN’s Secure Core servers are in data centers in Switzerland, Iceland, and Sweden, which are countries with strong privacy laws. Plus, the Secure Core servers are physically located in high-security areas to ensure that all servers are protected. Critical infrastructure in Switzerland is housed 1,000 meters below the surface in a former army fallout shelter. The data center in Iceland is located in a secure former military base, while the servers in Sweden are also underground.

Strong Encryption

Proton VPN uses AES-256 for data encryption, 4096-bit RSA for key exchange, and HMAC with SHA384 for message authentication. They use strong protocols such as IKEv2/IPSec and Open VPN, and they also have DNS Leak Protection. Proton VPN also includes the Perfect Forward Secrecy feature that prevents encrypted web traffic from being captured and decrypted, should the encryption key from a subsequent session gets compromised. This is possible because they generate a new encryption key with each connection.

No Logs Policy

Proton VPN operates under Swiss Law, which is outside the US and EU jurisdiction. This means that the company is not obliged to save, share, or perform any tracking or monitoring of their user’s web activity, nor surrender them to any third-party. The No-Logs Policy applies to all users, even those who use the free version. Proton VPN also publishes transparency reports on their website, which they update whenever they receive a notable new legal request.

Kill Switch and Always-On VPN

The Kill Switch feature stops all internet traffic should your device lose connection to the VPN service. The Always-On feature reconnects your device automatically to the VPN server. These features ensure that your privacy remains protected in the event of VPN server disconnection.

Tor Over VPN

This built-in feature routes all web traffic through the Tor anonymity network that allows access to dark web or Onion sites.

Multiple Devices

Proton VPN runs on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux devices, as well as routers. The maximum number of devices you can connect simultaneously depends on the subscription plan you get. The free version lets you connect only one device, but the paid plans allow you to connect up to 5 or up to 10 devices at a time.

Worldwide Network

Proton VPN has over 1,000 servers in 54 countries. Their high-speed servers have a minimum of 1 Gbps bandwidth, while many of their servers utilize 10 Gbps connections.

Support Center

Proton VPN’s Support Center provides different categories where you can find information to help you with any issues or inquiries you have. The categories include Download and Set-up, Troubleshooting, and General Information guides. You may also send your inquiries via ticketed request by filling up their online form.

      Not the best
As an email service Proton is among the best. As a VPN, Proton is not that great with many problems like possible DNS leaks which should never happen, big prices on their plans, low download speeds from a lot of locations and so on.

      Prices are way too high
Download speed is too low from most locations with some exceptions but this shouldn’t be the norm for a VPN that asks $4 monthly for their basic plan. I can get an amazing service for less that amount with NordVPN or Surfshark.

      Poor VPN
ProtonVPN is a poor attempt at being a good VPN. Their prices are way too high for the offering and compared to their competition they don’t stand a chance. The only thing truly top-notch about them is their free option which is good.

      DNS leaks
I detected DNS leaks with Proton which was a complete shocker because I know they are good at this thing (i.e. protection) and I’ve read some ProtonVPN reviews and those people didn’t find any leaks. Soon as I’ve seen this I stopped using it completely.

      Best Free VPN out there
Their free plan is actually pretty darn good. I think it could be the best free VPN out there. Their paid plans are also good but they are a bit pricey if you ask me. There are better options out there that offer more things.

      ProtonVPN is a strong option
I like that they offer multiple ways to connect to the VPN from directly clicking a button or going on their map and selecting a location or using the Profiles tab. You can also create a profile that will contain your particular, personalized configurations

      Use friendly interface and more
Their interface is so user-friendly. I didn’t need any explanations and managed to figure things out of my own, without much hand holding. Connects rapidly and I saw decent to good speeds.

Just 2 devices for the basic plans
Their basic plans only allow 2 devices at the same time while the Plus plus allow 5. It’s too little for me. Considering their pricing structure, I think they could have offered at least 3 for the basic and 7 for the Plus plans. They have a lot of things going for them but this isn’t one of them.

Isn’t Switzerland awesome? ProtonVPN is located there and the Swiss law says your data is safe and does not require retention of information pertaining to your bandwidth, IP address or online activity. Sign me up

      Who needs a guide?
There’s a guide to using BitTorrent with ProtonVPN. Is this a good thing or a bad one? Well, it’s good to have a guide to rely on but I would assume that it would be better if things would have been more straightforward and this wasn’t such a “science” and you’d be able to figure torrenting out.

Low download speed is their downfall
Download speed is laughable. Even if I connected to somewhere close by to my location the download speed was under 10-20 mbps which is unacceptable. It’s not like this in every location but it does have a lot of them with low speeds.

      I like ProtonVPN
No data logging: just like the man ordered 😉 Unblocks Netflix US and many other libraries plus other streaming services worldwide. Their encryption is one of the best in the business for sure.

Not as good as the big guys in the biz
Compared to NordVPN, ExpressVPN or Surfshark, ProtonVPN is just not up to par. I’ve had a chance to test all 4 and Nord is probably the best with ExpressVPN coming in close second (but with a higher price tag which is their major drawback). ProtonVPN might be a 10-20 kind of VPN.

      Speed is not the best
ProtonVPN can easily unlock content from Netflix (not all libraries but the more important ones), Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime. But speed is not the best unfortunately and that’s why I can’t give it a 5 star review.

      Less than 60 countries
ProtonVPN has a good amount of servers worldwide but the number of countries in which these servers are located could be a lot higher. It’s at 54 right now and for me, anything less than 60 is just not that good.

      More devices per license
Would have liked a few more devices per license (it’s limited at 10) but then again, other similar VPNs offer 7 or even less so it is what it is I guess.

      Best one for streaming movies
Netflix works!!! Plus other streaming services also work very well so if this is the reason why you want a VPN then this works.

      Ok
I signed up knowing I can ask for a refund if things don’t add up with what I wanted but this wasn’t the case. My internet speed is average at best so this made it even slower but I only use it for streaming or to download ebooks so speed is not that big of a deal.
