What is it about mini drones that make them so appealing?

mini drones

Size is one of the critical elements that pilots and flyers consider when it comes to drones nowadays. Compact goods, as a whole, are in fashion these days since people prefer convenience over other aspects. Moreover, these compact drones come with state-of-the-art technology that makes them very useful to enthusiasts. When they first launched, mini-drones did not attract much of a market, and these were mostly sold to children and young adults. These drones were disregarded by the masses when they first rolled out in the market, but as time has passed, they have taken over the market by a storm, and every pilot wishes to own one of them.

Easy Carriage – What Everyone Wants!

People from multiple professions own drones; Photographers use them to film epic scenes with stable cameras mounted on them, security companies use them for surveillance and various other purposes. Sometimes, photography enthusiasts wish to capture breath-taking scenes with the HD cameras 4, but not all drones can support the weight of the stabilization system that comes with it. Moreover, other enthusiasts participate in drone races and want to show off their piloting skills, hence choose to get hold of one of them. Whatever the case may be, a few traits are demanded by nearly all of the owners, amongst these key features, one of the most prominent and decisive ones in the carriage.

Drone-owners, regardless of why they have purchased it, want to carry it along with them. For instance, the photo-enthusiasts wish to keep their drone beside them wherever they go so that they can capture any beautiful scene they come across. For this, the drone must be small and well-packed, making it easy for the owners to carry around. Mini Drones are small, lightweight, and convenient to carry around. These drones usually weigh around one pound (approximately 0.5 kgs). Thus, they are not much of a burden to bear.

Beginners Have No Problem Operating Mini Drones

Many people never get a drone because they fear that they would waste a substantial amount of money since they do not know how to fly these drones. Large conventional drones come with complex features and hard to understand and comprehend controllers. Moreover, their size adds to their complication and makes it nearly impossible for the newbies to control and maneuver these drones. However, Mini Drones are made considering this particular audience, and this is one reason why it comes loaded with various assistive features.

With the inclusion of one-touch take-off and landing, getting started doesn’t remain a problem at all. Moreover, the optical flow positioning that is embedded into various models of mini drones, which is a great help for beginners who are not able to maintain the altitude of their drone during their flight. Likewise, altitude hold has a similar effect and prevents the drone from crashing haphazardly. All in all, they are the favorites of newbies, and this is one reason that they are a popular present.

Mini Drones Have Same Power & Internals As Massive Ones

A major point of concern regarding the mini drones is its power. Some users believe that the strength and flying experience is compromised to ensure a smaller and more compact size. However, this is not the truth. The leaders of the drone industry, such as DJI and Parrot, put a lot of effort into creating these drones and use the latest technology and components in their drones. It includes high-quality motors and propellers, along with strong materials. The lift and maneuverability of mini-drones are comparable to the larger drones available in the market. On the other hand, these are more agile and fast than their heavier cousins. Carbon fibers and metals are precisely chosen and carefully put together, ensuring that the drone has a strong, lightweight, and rigid structure.

Are Mini Drones Accessible?

The small size and compactness of the mini drones allow access to every place. Indoor flying is one thing that mini drones are good at, and you can fly them easily inside your home. For drone racing, these drones are also a great tool as they can be moved around easily. Even outdoors, the drone can take shots from those places which otherwise would not have been accessible. Hence, it can be immensely beneficial for cinematographers as well. Lately, one of the customers for these drones are security agencies and purchase these drones to keep a check on the law & order situation.

What About the Price? Are Mini Drones Cheaper?

The benefits of these mini drones are countless, and it is a proven fact that these drones are by no means any inferior to their bigger counterparts. If these arguments are not enough to gain your attention, then check this out; mini-drones are generally cheaper than full-sized ones available in the market with the same tech specs. Considering their target market, which is newbies most of the time, the producers try to keep the prices low so that the customers can be attracted. Moreover, due to high competition in the industry, the producers are compelled to keep their pricing competitive.

The Final Verdict

Over the years, the trends have changed significantly, and people have started demanding more convenience over other factors. Moreover, heavier and burdensome tech is quickly becoming outdated. Before making any final decision, do have a good look at customer reviews about the product and insight from technical blogs on the internet. It will give you a good knowledge of a product before you are financially invested in it. That being said, mini drones are trending right now as the cheaper, more agile option in the drone market. It is a must-try for a drone enthusiast!

  1. Agility and responsiveness were our two main requests, I didn’t want to constantly worry I might crash it. This is harder to achiever with a bigger drone, especially if you’re a beginner.

  2. We wanted something lightweight, portable and easy to use. Mavic mini checked all the boxes, we use it for every single road trip.

  3. I bought mine because I was absolutely terrified I might crash it and I didn’t want to spend a lot. Well, now I wanna upgrade, I’m hooked!

  4. I went for a Ryze Tello which was very cheap when I got it. I was just learning the ropes and didn’t need to have to worry about what happens if/when I hit it. Sure enough I hit a few things and the drone became garbage. Got another one and another one until I had enough experience to not hit trees or other obstacles. There are a lot of cheap drones out there that are a good fit for a beginner (child or adult). Just do a bit of research before buying as sometimes adding paying just $10-$15 more can get you a better drone overall.

    • At around $100, the Ryze Tello is unmatched now. It’s probably the best cheap drone out there right now. Lightweight (just 80g), programmable plus it has flight technology that has been designed by DJI. It’s a real steal at $100.

      • The question is: can it take a beating? I mean is it a good fit for someone who has zero experience flying a drone? I am considering getting a drone but I’m clearly a super newbie so I need to get something that is within my budget and that is beginner friendly as well.

        • Go ahead and get yourself a Ryze Tello. You won’t be sorry. It’s the perfect drone for beginners to fly. Don’t worry if you break one or two of them. That can happen and it does happen to a lot of us but soon you’ll be ready to fly a bigger, better drone. Be ready to invest a few hundred dollars to get a few of them as you are bound to hit something ;).

  5. The security firm I work for does use both mini drones and drones for their surveillance. Whenever we want to go in stealthily, mini drones are the go to. They are very easy to carry, harder to spot (especially at night) and they can record activity for a few hours depending on their capacity.

    • Hi Sam,

Thank you for sharing your comment on our review platform, we really appreciate it!
Just a remark, we don’t approve the use of drones for sneaky purposes, especially as an individual.

Of course, we are just a platform and your words are your own, so is your free time so be wise how you use your free time!
Don’t get into trouble and don’t get others into trouble!

For authorized security companies, this is a different story.

    • Plus they are also quite inexpensive so if something bad happens you just get another one. I have a friend that has already bought 3 of them already and he is not stopping here :)). He says it’s not a big problem to spend a hundred dollars for one if it gets damaged beyond repairs.

      • I destroyed 2 until I really started to learn how to fly a drone. Now it’s been months since my last hit and I’m confident I can keep the good streak going. Mini drones are a must if you’re just starting out. They have good speed, are inexpensive and much easier to handle than a bigger drone.

      • There are mini drones that are even cheaper in the under $50 region so it’s very inexpensive to get into droning. Even if you’re not good at all at flying one in the beginning you can afford to make mistakes (even bigger ones) and change a few drones until you get the hang of things.

  6. Thank you for explaining why we should choose a mini drone. I only know about the reduced cost but I’ve learned that is just the tip of the iceberg. As a beginner, a mini drone makes a lot of sense. I want to familiarize myself with flying a drone and flying a smaller one should be easier. Plus there’s always the stress factor of owning a more expensive drone versus a cheaper one. If anything happens, replacing an inexpensive one is easy and cheap.

    • Hi Robert,

      Thank you for your comment.

We totally agree, starting with a cheap drone makes it more fun. After a few practice hours, you should be able to handle a more expensive drone.
      Have fun flying!

  7. I bought one for myself to keep myself busy during this pandemic. I only fly it around our rest house by the beach and it has made all the difference to my sanity! LOL.. If you’re looking for a drone for hobby or leisure purposes, I suggest you look into minidrones. I have no regrets on my purchase 😉

  8. @Tom – Well, I got a DEERC D10 foldable drone. It is 720p, has altitude hold and headless mode among others. I like it and it’s quite cheap so if you bust it up, that’s not a big issue. But, I was lucky enough to not wreck it (yet, at least).

    • The DEERC D10 is a good one but if you want something even cheaper, then go for a DEERC D20 mini drone for kids. Much cheaper (probably one of the cheapest on the market) and it is a great one for a beginner. If you destroy it (and chances are you will just like I did) you can just get another one and you won’t feel the burn in your pocket 😉 It’s also much easier to learn the ropes with a mini drone than with a bigger drone, in my opinion.

      • Thank you for the replies, Adam and Chase. Chase, are you using the DEERC D20 now? Is it a good mini drone for a total newbie like myself?

        • I have used it when I got started and so has my kid. We both had great success with these kinds of mini drones. We destroyed 4 of them between us but since they are cheap it wasn’t a problem. We’re now experts at flying, especially my son. He can do all sorts of crazy stunts with his drone. He has a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom now which is a real beast compared to the DEERC D20 but I would never recommend to anyone that they start off by flying a real, costly drone. A mini drone is a good way to get things going.

  9. Beginners hate the idea of spending too much money on a drone that they could potentially ruin in their first flights. It just scares them away. I know, because I was a beginner. I’m getting better at it but if it wasn’t for the chance of getting a mini drone I wouldn’t have even started. A drone was just too expensive for me. I saw plenty of videos of people destroying their drones and wasting hundreds of dollars in a flash. Anyway, I’ve taken it slowly and started with the basics, followed some guides of Youtube and now I’m getting much better at flying my mini drone.

    • Hey Adam, what mini drone did you get? I’m considering getting one but just like you said, I am scared I will mess things up and wreck my drone or mini drone fairly quickly. Which one is a good fit for a beginner in your experience?

  10. I want to purchase a mini drone but I have been doubtful if it would be worth the purchase. The discussion in the article definitely helped clear out some things I was wary about. I would have to agree that mini drones are appealing especially to the beginners or non-professional segment. I hope you have a discussion on great mini drone suggestions, I would want to go through that.

  11. Wow, I actually didn’t know they are specifically called mini drones, or that they made a mini segment for drones in general. I’ve been considering to buy a drone but I always thought that I’d be clumsy in handling them and it would just crash and my money would end up wasted. Mini drones sounds like something that would fit for me, you know nothing too professional just want to try things out but would still deliver what you need! Thank you for this!
